Low Noise Protection Wall for Rail Traffic
The expansion of rail traffic demanded by the Green Book of the European Commission as a goal of the highest priority for community traffic policy faces the problem of the noise pollution it creates. The noise registers created show that the populace must be protected from these noise sources through adequate measures.
According to the European work group for rail traffic noise, noise protection walls are the most commonly used noise protection measure, with the effectiveness being even better the nearer they are placed to the point the noise arises from.
The main problem in the current construction of noise protection walls near the track grid is the foundation. For reasons of drainage and maintenance of the track grid (plugging, planing), no foundation may be placed in the immediate vicinity. Therefore the conventional 4-5 m high noise protection walls are placed at a distance of approximately 4 m. In addition to the positive characteristic of noise protection, the high walls have the disadvantage that they cause a total blockage of the vision of the passengers and the noise on the second track being travelled is only dampened slightly.
ART has developed a new, low noise protection wall for railways which stands without foundations at the rail track – the location where noise arises.
Advantages
- stands at rail track without foundation
(no foundation necessary and therefore no impairment of drainage, cable running, etc.) - low structural height: Noise is trapped there where it arises and the view of the rail passengers is not impaired
Setup between two tracks possible, allowing noise reduction of the distant train as well - concept of noise reduction is of the type of a bundle of measures: e.g. polishing rails, hard plastic instead of cast iron brakes, low noise protection walls, etc.
- cost reduction in comparison to conventional high noise protection walls
- better effect due to nearness to wheel rail system
- interior workings of the cartridges equipped with rubber granulate from old tire recycling (good noise reduction and resource-saving).
